Innovating for a More Sustainable Future

At Pfizer, we share the European Commission’s Green Deal ambitions to address the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation and have implemented a series of measures aimed at reducing our environmental footprint and contributing to a healthier world.

Recognizing the urgency of challenges that climate change presents, in 2022 Pfizer committed to further reducing GHG emissions by aiming to achieve the voluntary Net-Zero Standard by 2040, ten years earlier than the timeline described in the standard. For more details, please see our climate change position statement. Our ambitions also extend to our partners, and we have been driving action throughout our value chain to help address the complex threat of climate change. As Europe strives for greater strategic autonomy and competitiveness, it's important to ensure that the Green Deal and environmental sustainability measures can be drivers of competitiveness and innovation in Europe, rather than obstacles and sources of regulatory burden and complexity. The pharmaceutical industry, through EFPIA, endorses the Antwerp Declaration and calls for an EU Industrial Deal to help enable this balance between innovation and competitiveness.

We believe environmental sustainability measures should be based on evidence, science, and risk-based approaches to environmental challenges and health and safety. We are committed to collaborating with policymakers to identify effective ways to reduce air, water, and soil pollution, in a way that balances environmental sustainability with continuity of R&D, manufacturing, and access to medicines in Europe.

As part of Pfizer’s purpose to deliver breakthroughs that change patients’ lives and our commitment to acting with integrity, we are working to minimize the environmental impacts of our products and mitigate the effects of climate change on the environment and on human health. Our efforts alone, however, will not create the level of action needed to mitigate these potential effects. We recognize the urgent need for action by all sectors, public and private, and will continue to partner with others to address climate change across our value chain.
